Facilitator Guide

How to Run a Cohort Session

A step-by-step guide for instructors and workshop facilitators using the Parametric Insurance Simulator with institutional groups.

Overview

The Facilitator Layer lets you run the simulator as a structured group exercise. You create a cohort — a named session with a shareable code — and participants join it before running scenarios. Their results are recorded automatically and displayed on your dashboard in real time. You can export everything to CSV for evaluation, reporting, or further analysis.

Webinar Program Agenda

A full program structure with timing and cohort integration. Cohort tracking is active throughout — participants join before Module 1 and their results appear on your dashboard in real time.

Total: 160 min
M1
Welcome & Cohort Setup
20 minPlenaryCohort
  • Facilitator creates cohort at /facilitator (do this before the session starts)
  • Display cohort code — participants join at /join and enter their name
  • Confirm participant count on dashboard matches the room before proceeding
  • Brief orientation: what parametric insurance is and what participants will do today
📚
M2
Parametric Insurance Foundations
25 minFacilitated
  • Walk through Education Center → "How It Works" tab (Tab 1) as a group
  • Explain basis risk using the Basis Risk tab (Tab 2) — this concept underpins all debrief discussions
  • Briefly cover the Loss & Damage Framework (Tab 4) — policy context for climate negotiators
  • Q&A and clarifications before first simulation run
M3
Simulation — Round 1: Foundational
35 minHands-onCohort
  • Participants run a foundational scenario independently: Drought or Flood (1 variable, ~4 min)
  • Facilitator runs the same scenario on the shared screen simultaneously
  • After completion: debrief tab opens automatically — discuss trigger result and blockchain timeline
  • Key discussion: what happens if the variable is 0.5 units away from threshold? That is basis risk.
  • Dashboard: call out a few participant results for group comparison
M4
Simulation — Round 2: Intermediate
35 minHands-onCohort
  • Participants choose an intermediate scenario: Hurricane or Heatwave (2 variables)
  • Independent run — no shared screen. Participants explore freely.
  • Debrief discussion: how does the majority trigger rule change outcomes with 2 variables?
  • Dashboard review: compare trigger rates across the room — why did some participants trigger and others not?
🌍
M5
Policy Implications Discussion
25 minFacilitated
  • Return to Education Center — Global Shield tab and Sendai Framework section
  • Discussion prompt: "If your country had parametric insurance today, what would your trigger variable be?"
  • Connect simulation results to real-world programmes: ARC, PCRAFI, IBLI, Global Shield
  • Address common objections: trust in oracles, political visibility of payouts, affordability
🏆
M6
Dashboard Review & Certificates
20 minWrap-upCohort
  • Facilitator opens dashboard on shared screen — show participant × scenario completion grid
  • Highlight outlier results for group reflection
  • Participants claim completion certificates from their scenario debrief pages
  • Export CSV from dashboard for your records — one click, instant download
  • Close: point participants to Methodology page for full model documentation
When to choose 4 hours: If your audience includes climate negotiators, government officials, or participants with prior policy exposure, the extended modules (M3E: Advanced Scenario, M5E: From Policy to Practice) add meaningful depth without overloading a general audience. For diplomatic or ministerial audiences, consider the dedicated Government Officials Consultancy Program instead.

Step-by-Step Guide

01

Create a Cohort

Go to the Facilitator Dashboard and choose Create a New Cohort. You will need to provide:

  • Session / Cohort Name — shown to participants when they join
  • Your Name — recorded on the dashboard
  • Organisation — optional
  • Dashboard PIN — 4–8 characters; write it down — it cannot be recovered.
On success you will see a cohort code in the format WORD-NNNN (e.g. RAIN-4721).

02
📣

Share the Code

Display or announce the cohort code to your participants. Suggested methods: project it on screen, include in pre-session email, write on a whiteboard. Direct participants to Scenarios and look for the Join a Cohort link, or navigate directly to /join.

03
👥

Participants Join

Each participant visits the Join page and completes two steps: (1) Enter the cohort code — the app validates it; (2) Enter their name. Once joined, a green badge appears in their navigation bar. Their browser saves this state locally.

💡 Tip: Ask participants to join before you begin the session so you can confirm the participant count on your dashboard matches the room.
04

Run the Scenarios

Participants run scenarios independently. Each takes approximately 3–5 minutes. Results are submitted automatically at the end of each scenario's debrief. The data recorded includes: Scenario name and ID, trigger status, payout amount and risk score, coverage tier, timestamp.

05
📊

Monitor the Dashboard

Go to Facilitator Dashboard and choose View Existing Dashboard. Enter your cohort code and PIN. The dashboard shows: summary stats, a participant × scenario grid, and a refresh button.

💡 Tip: Keep the dashboard open on a second screen during the session so you can see completions arrive in real time and call out interesting results for group discussion.
06

Export Results

Click Export CSV on the dashboard to download a spreadsheet of all completion records. The CSV includes one row per completion with columns for: Participant name, Scenario ID and name, Triggered (TRUE/FALSE), Payout amount (USD), Coverage tier, Risk score (0–100), Completion timestamp.
